We Need Encouragement Now

When we glanced at 2020 in our rear view mirror, we were thrilled to speed down the road into the new year. But we were jolted with a sad and terrifying scene at our Capitol.

It made me realize that life isn’t dictated by our calendar. We live in a fallen world, with sickness and sin reminding us of our need for a Savior.

If you know Jesus, he is your hope. I was reminded today when reading Revelation 1 that Jesus is “the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.” (v. 5 NIV) Despite what we see around us, Jesus is Lord over death and he is the King of kings. Period. That’s why we can have hope.

Even more, John proclaims in that same verse, “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.” That, my friend, is the greatest reason for hope in these times.

Our senses are flooded with the world’s perspective. We watch the news, read a blog, absorb social media posts, scan our favorite source for information or listen to a podcast. And you know what? Everyone is telling us how we should think.

Let’s toss those sources aside and go straight to the Word of God. Our way of thinking must line up with it. But we must know his Word first.

A good friend of mine is a walking Bible. He knows so many verses by heart and picks them out of the air whenever he needs them. His mind is shaped by the Word of God. Not by the world. I need to follow his example and ingest the Word more seriously. Memorize what God says. Meditate on it. Speak it to myself and others.

“Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

“He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.” (Ps. 1:1-3 ESV)

How refreshing! Not only should I read the Word, meditate on it and speak it, but I should delight in it. That’s the key. When I delight in it, I’m wrapped up in it. It dictates my thinking. I am satisfied by it.

I need a good stream of clean water right now, don’t you? We find it in God’s Word. Fruit and thriving leaves are the result.

Today, let’s absorb the Word of God and find our way of thinking in it.

Christ-Centered Prayer

Do you want your prayer life to be personally empowering and refreshing? Let me recommend Christ-centered prayer.

Hey Jon, aren’t all our prayer supposed to be Christ-centered? Sure, but that doesn’t mean they are.

We can go into prayer two ways. The first is with our needs in the spotlight. The second is with Jesus in the spotlight. There are times when we should lead with our needs, especially when they’re urgent or heavy on our heart. God wants us to come to him openly, for he is our Father.

When your prayer life is Christ-centered, there will be a marked difference in how you come away from your encounters with God. Let’s use today as an example.

I know you’ve got some things to bring to God. Prayer requests of your own and of others. That’s good. We should be doing that.

However, how about starting differently? Let’s begin with Christ. Recognize his presence as you come to the throne of God. Acknowledge him. Honor him. Thank him for being there with you in this time of prayer. Spend a few minutes letting your mind get lost in the thought that the God of the universe has taken time to be present. It’s remarkable. He’s got a big universe to run, but he always has time for you.

That thought is empowering! You’re calling on the One who spoke creation into existence.

Next, talk to Jesus about himself. Recognize and honor him for who he is. He is your Savior, the Living Word, Son of the Most High God, King, Sovereign Lord, Love, Emmanuel (God with us) and so much more.

Are you starting to get excited? Is your focus shifting? Is your spirit being refreshed?

Now bring Jesus your needs but do it in a Christ-centered way. Here’s how. Instead of starting with you, start with him. You’re already focused on Jesus, so continue that way.

Notice the difference. You could pray, “Lord Jesus, I need your wisdom for a couple of big issues today. I’ve got some tough decisions to make.”

Instead, you could pray another way. “Lord Jesus, you are the all-wise God. You’re all-knowing. Praise you for that. Please give me your wisdom today, that I might bring you glory in some really hard decisions I’m facing. I trust in you, not in my own understanding.”

There’s power when Jesus is at the center of your prayers. Instead of focusing on “I” and “me,” focus on “You.” That You is Jesus. And that’s Christ-centered prayer.

If you want your prayer life to be energizing and empowering, enjoying Jesus in a fresh way, then begin your times with God, centering on Jesus.

Christmas Every Day

We make a lot of Christmas each year, but for believers we celebrate the King every day. At least we should.

As you look back at Christmas, are you leaving Jesus in the manger? Think about how you can honor him as King in the year ahead. First of all, giving him your best time is a great way. Start the day with God, spending time with our Savior and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in your heart.

I’m finishing up a year-long study in Luke that I had thought would take three months. I’m racing to complete the final chapter by New Year’s Eve. I think I’m going to make it.

he point is this. Instead of rushing through the book and the study guides, I took as much time as God wanted me to. He had a lot to say to me this year through Luke. Giving Jesus time was a way I honored him as King. And I’ve enjoyed being with him each morning.

I’ve made my choice for 2019 and how I’ll start every day with God. I’m planning to explore prayer. Who knows how long it will take? I have 12 lessons in the study guide I’m using. It could take 12 weeks. Or 12 months! The guide is just a guide. I let God work in my heart free-form.

How will you honor Jesus as King in 2019? Our Savior went from the manger to the cross in 33 years. He did that for us. And when he rose again, he declared is rule of over all. Sin, death, Satan — everything. Let’s give him honor throughout the year ahead.
